August 19, 2013 – Well, this is a first: Hasbro is super-sizing its action figures with their all new “Black Series” action line. Beginning in August, 2013, six-inch action figures have been released throughout the United States and, to a lesser extent, in the U.K. Retail price is about $19.99 (U.S.) or £19.99 (U.K.).
For decades, the figures were basically 3-3/4″ tall (a scale ratio of 1:18 for the average adult male). Some figures, such as the droids and jawas, were smaller than that; others (think Chewbacca or Darth Vader) were taller. The increase to six inches means more visible detail, a new exciting line for collectors and, of course — “cha-CHING!” — more profits for Hasbro (formerly Kenner).
Currently released for sale at stores are: X-Wing Pilot Luke Skywalker, Sandtrooper, Darth Maul and R2-D2. Coming in the fall, 2013, will be Princess Leia (Episode VI), Han Solo (Episode IV), Greedo (Episode IV), and Boba Fett (Episode V). Let me know when Greedo hits store shelves!
