Trivia Q.: Where Was the Desert Scene Filmed Approaching Jabba’s Palace?

January 21, 2014 – I always assumed Star Wars’ desert scenes were filmed in Tunisia, used in every Star Wars film except Episode V. Not so. Below is a DELETED SCENE from Return of the Jedi where Luke Skywalker is ensconced in a cave and, for the first time, activates his green lightsaber, and then C-3PO and R2-D2 are filmed heading toward’s Jabba’s palace in the distance. (Cue to 1:03) Can you name the desert where this was actually filmed?

ANSWER: This last video by Gordon Tarpley shows the actual area where the mud-road to Jabba’s palace was filmed. He also mentions Luke Skywalker’s cave in the deleted scene (above), which has since collapsed. The desert location is named in the video:
