February 15, 2014 – Freddie Prinze Jr. is the voice actor behind the newest animated swashbuckling Jedi, Kanan (pronounced “KAY-nan”), in the upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels. (TRIVIA: Freddie Prinze Jr. has facial scars, which are the result of some lightsaber fights he had with friends when he was only four years old.) This newest Jedi is a survivor of the Emperor’s Jedi purge (Order 66), who has gone underground and initially favors a blaster over his lightsaber.
Fan reaction is decidely mixed across the Internet. Some commentators have noted that with his gotee and long face, he looks like Flynn Rider from Disney’s Tangled. Others have said he appears to be a mixture of Kyle Katarn plus the McQuarrie-concept Han Solo, who originally had a beard in early sketches. Still others have bemoaned a recent photo of the 5POA (five points of articulation) action figure, to be released this fall, as another step backwards by Hasbro.
I recommend withholding judgment and to give the series a chance to establish itself. Star Wars Rebels will debut this fall as a one-hour special on the Disney Channel and then will be broadcast on Disney XD as half-hour episodes.
