Star Wars to Film in Iceland

March 27, 2014 – With filming for Star Wars scheduled to begin in May, 2014, one geographic location for filming has been leaked: Iceland. Many will be tempted to jump to the conclusion that this means snowy or icy conditions and a return to the planet Hoth, from the opening scene of The Empire Strikes Back (1980). But they would probably be wrong. While Empire was filmed in Norway and featured, in a couple scenes, some very real blizzard conditions, Episode VII filming is rumored to borrow some of Iceland’s rocky, arctic-like geography. Simply put, Iceland is more green than white and is not as snowy/icy as Norway, especially during the May/June filming period.

Iceland is at about the same latitude as Norway, as the following map illustrates:

So if a return to Hoth is not likely, which other ice worlds in the Star Wars universe could this be? One possibility is the planet Ilum, featured in the Clone Wars microseries that ran on Cartoon Network in the mid 2000’s. Another possibility is Orto Plutonia, which made an appearance in The Clone Wars TV series. Or director J.J. Abrams and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan could simply create another cold, rocky, hostile world and name it something exotic. How about Dislandia? (OK, I made that one up….)
