July 29, 2014 – Many are the young childhood stars, cast in epic movies or highly regarded TV shows, who then leave acting behind. They may even try to forget and bury all reminders of their former lives, but always the shadow remains.
Jake Lloyd (b. 5 March 1989) was cast, at the tender age of eight, to play the young Anakin Skywalker, one of the most iconic roles of all time. And yet, after watching the following interview, you get the sense that Jake Lloyd would much rather forget this chapter in his life.
I’ve met Jake Lloyd at various conventions and celebrity appearances over the years. He seems polite and courteous enough. But unlike the majority of Star Wars actors and actresses, the vibe he gives off is that he is just tolerating being there. He has sworn off Star Wars forever (other than appearing at various conventions and autograph sessions), reportedly destroyed his Star Wars momentos from Episode I, and has altogether quit acting.
While critics have panned Jake Lloyd’s wooden acting (someone once called him “Mannequin Skywalker”), recall that he was only 8 years old when hired and barely 10 when the movie premiered. And to be fair, Jake Lloyd did not write or direct one of the crappiest Star Wars movies ever (Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace) (1999). For that, you can thank George Lucas.
