July 12, 2015 – In early May, the mainstream media eagerly reported that Boba Fett was about to star in his own Star Wars anthology movie slated for a 2018 release. The problem with echo chambers, of course, is that the story endlessly repeats itself while the rumor – because that’s all the story ever was – grows more and more distant from its sources. And the most important source, Disney/Lucasfilm, never confirmed the Boba Fett report.

So move over, Boba Fett. Walt Disney Pictures has now confirmed that Han Solo will be granted his own anthology movie with a release date of May 25, 2018.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie; 21 Jump Street) will train their lenses on a young Han Solo, fleshing out his back story as he becomes the smuggler and scoundrel we all grew to love. The script will be written by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back; The Force Awakens) and by his son, Jon Kasdan.

Lord and Miller said in a press release, “This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with.” They further stated:

We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

So will Boba Fett eventually star in his own anthology film? We don’t know yet. Could he make a surprise appearance in the Han Solo movie? Possibly, as their paths do eventually collide. But again, that’s nothing more than speculation.

Here is the updated movie-release timeline to help you keep everything straight:

► Dec. 18, 2015: Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens premieres

► Dec. 16, 2016: Star Wars: Rogue One, the first Star Wars anthology film, to be directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn and Riz Ahmed, will be released December 16, 2016. The movie will focus on the rebels.

► May 26, 2017: Star Wars: Episode VIII, to be directed by Rian Johnson, premieres

► May 25, 2018: Han Solo movie (no official title yet) confirmed for release

► Star Wars: Episode IX: no release date announced yet.
