April 7, 2016 – Here is an intriguing look at the first teaser-trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Rogue One is the first of the standalone or anthology films in the Star Wars series. Director Gareth Edwards and Producer Kathleen Kennedy have assembled an incredibly talented cast of actors for the film, scheduled for release on 16 December 2016.
The cast includes 32-year-old Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) and 36-year-old Diego Luna (Milk), both pictured at left, as well as Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Butler; The Last King of Scotland), Mads Mikkelsen (The Hunt), Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed.
Rogue One depicts a ragtag band of rebel fighters, who have banded together to steal schematics and plans to the notorious Death Star. But don’t expect to see any Jedi, as this is the first Star Wars film without any Jedi in sight.
Nor should you expect to meet any Bothans, whom Mon Mothma (Caroline Blakiston) alluded to in Return of the Jedi (1983)(“Many Bothans died to bring us this information.”) The reason is that Rogue One deals with the first set of Rebels to steal plans for the first Death Star. The Bothans are a later set of Rebels, introduced in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996), set between Episodes V and VI. The Bothans steal the plans for the second Death Star, still under construction.
After Rogue One’s Mon Mothma describes her as “reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined,” Jones’ young character replies, “This is a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.” The new Mon Mothma is played by Irish actress Genevieve O’Reilly.
Felicity Jones plays the role of Jyn Erso, who may be the daughter of Galen. Rumor is that Galen is the scientist that took over the Geonosian Death Star project. But feeling overwhelming guilt for his horrific contribution to the Empire, Galen defects and enlists the help of his rebellious daughter, Jyn, to make things right.
Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso continues Star Wars’ tradition of strong female characters, including Princess Leia (played by Carrie Fisher), Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman), Rey (Daisy Ridley) and the animated Ahsoka Tano (voiced by Ashley Eckstein).
Set before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977), Rogue One “goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know,” said Kennedy.
Principal shooting and photography are in London. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit movie theaters December 16th.
