May 5, 2016 – It was only a matter of time before Tiki Bar culture collided with Star Wars to produce some awesome tiki bar mugs available from ThinkGeek.com.
Tiki bars have been making something of a comeback in popularity. Disney’s newly-opened Trader Sam’s at Disney’s Polynesian Resort in Orlando [Review here] is one iteration.
Tiki bars are identified by their tiki décor, which follows a romanticized view of tropical cultures (usually Polynesian or South Pacific). Decorated by a combination of tiki god masks and carvings, torches, grasscloths, fish nets, glass floats, bamboo, and tropical murals, tiki bars were popular beginning in the 1930s.
Establishments such as “Don the Beachcomber” (Los Angeles, 1933) and “Trader Vic’s” (Oakland, California, 1936) were popular for over three decades and gave birth to unique cocktails, such as the mai tai.
Tiki bars fell out of vogue until a “tiki revival” in the 1990’s. And now the ceramic tiki mugs are back with a vengeance.
The folks at ThinkGeek.com are now offering “Geeki Tiki Mugs“, which you can use for drinking or decoration. Choose from Boba Fett, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, R2-D2, a Stormtrooper, or Yoda ceramic mugs ($14.99 each, or buy all six for $72.99 if pre-ordered before their July release date).
The mugs have a 2-inch (5cm) interior diameter and 2 1/4-inch (5.7cm) to 5 1/2-inch (14cm) exterior diameter, depending on the sculpt. The tallest is Chewbacca (7 1/2″/19cm). The shortest are R2-D2 and Yoda (6 1/2″/16.5cm). Boba Fett, Darth Vader, and the Stormtrooper are midsized (7″/17.8cm). None is microwaveable or dishwasher-safe, so be prepared for some hand-washing duties.
