“Rogue One”: The Darkest Star Wars Movie Yet?

May 18, 2016 – The rumor mill is starting to heat up about the gritty tone and feel of Rogue One: A Star Wars Movie.

While Star Wars is no stranger to violence – think of all the severed limbs, lightsaber-pierced torsos, and decapitations we have witnessed – action scenes may become even more gruesome in director Gareth Edwards’ production.

According to leaked artwork, Darth Vader will feature prominently in the upcoming movie. Set in the period before Star Wars Ep. IV: A New Hope, the Empire is at the peak of its power and the Jedi have largely been vanquished. Therefore, Vader’s appearance on screen should come as no surprise.

Leaked artwork leaves little doubt that Darth Vader will return to the screen in a very big way.

As he attempts to thwart the Rebels from stealing the Death Star plans, however, it is the Sith Lord’s utter violence that could make Rogue One one of the darkest of the Star Wars films.

According to makingstarwars.net, indiewire.com and other sources, Rogue One could feature some rather violent scenes. While the reports are unconfirmed, possible action sequences could include Lord Vader dismembering people as he throws his lightsaber, or decapitating rebels, or levitating their bodies to serve as human shields.

The actors and the characters they portray are said to include:

● Ben Mendelssohn – an Imperial officer named Director Krennic
● Diego Luna – Rebel officer named Captain Cassian Andor
● Riz Ahmed – Rebel soldier named Bodhi
● Jiang Wen – Baze, a freelance assassin
● Donnie Yen – Chirrut, a spiritual warrior
● Felicity Jones – protagonist and reluctant Rebel, Jyn Erso
● Mads Mikkelsen – father of Jyn Erso
● Forest Whitaker – role unknown

Vader will not be the only baddie. Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn will play the role of Director Krennic, an Imperial Officer, with a very bad attitude.

In addition, look for two new spacecraft – the Rebels’ U-Wing and the Empire’s TIE Striker. The vehicles will be introduced in combat, though it’s not clear which actors’ characters will be flying them.

All of this is good news for Hasbro and other toymakers. Rogue One, as the first stand-alone or anthology film, will be released on December 16, 2016 – just in time for the Holidays and the busy shopping season.
