May 25, 2016, 3:40pm EST – Well, that didn’t take long.
Organizer ReedPOP posted the above sign on the Star Wars Celebration Facebook page within 30 minutes of tickets being released for sale online, which went live today at 12:00 noon Pacific/ 3:00 PM Eastern/ 8:00 PM GMT+1.
The $700 Jedi Master VIP tickets sold out within the first 10 minutes or less, according to frustrated users’ comments on the Facebook page. One user wrote: “After all the errors (messages) and Europe (Celebration mis-direct), I still got into the queue at 3:06, got through at 3:10 on the dot… VIP was gone.”
In addition, for several minutes, numerous customers could not access the ticket site and were mis-directed to either the Celebration Europe (2016) ticket page or an error message.
This tech problem has happened in past years, due to overwhelming demand on the servers. With patience, customers were eventually directed to a Virtual Queue. Typical users reported buying their tickets within 5-15 minutes of entering the Virtual Queue.
We estimate that 300-350 VIP tickets were sold, consistent with previous Celebrations. That’s $210,000 (300 x $700 each) charged in less than 15 minutes.
We always look at the bright side: Even if you had intended to buy the Master Jedi VIP package ($700) and had to settle for the 4-day ticket ($150), ReedPOP just saved you $550.
No applause necessary.
