May 28, 2016 – Yesterday’s online release of collectible emoji pins from ReedPOP – the quirky offshoot of Reed Exhibitions which runs Star Wars Celebration – got off to a rocky start.
Customers reported numerous tech complaints with ReedPOP’s rollout of its first batch of emoji pins. Based on emojis artwork from the Star Wars app, the first 4-pack includes Poe Dameron, Finn, Rey and Kylo Ren from The Force Awakens.
The tech issues included numerous error messages while attempting to login yesterday; the inability of some mobile devices to access the site; a requirement that customers open a “ReedPOP Supply Co Account”; a mandatory “shipping fee” of $20 to $24 – even though the website states that all pins must be picked up at Celebration and that no shipping will occur; the lack of an ability to pay via Paypal; and a missing sample photo of the bundled T-shirt, which customers are required to purchase along with the pins.
ReedPOP later released a statement on Twitter that the shipping fees were a mistake and would be refunded to customers.
The total charge for the first set of 4 pins and a T-shirt was $45.00
Some customers were undaunted and successfully completed their purchases for the first set of pins, which are only available online and only if you have prepurchased your tickets for Star Wars Celebration (London).
A second set of pins, the “Droids Emoji Pin Set”, will feature four droids: C-3PO, R2-D2, Chopper, and BB-8. No sale date has been announced yet for the second set.
A total of 40 emoji pins will be offered, with the first exclusive eight described above. The other 32 pins will be offered at various sites at Celebration – some can be purchased, others claimed at special events, and still others can only be traded for with Celebration staff.
