“Star Wars Rebels” Season Three Announced

August 8, 2016 – Lucasfilm has announced some new details for Season 3 of its animated series, Star Wars Rebels. The first episode of the new season is entitled “Steps into Shadow”.

From the Lucasfilm press release:

Having established a secret base on Atollon, the Ghost crew, now led by a more powerful Ezra, strengthens the rebel fleet by acquiring new resources and recruits eager to stand against the Empire. However, the Imperial efforts to eliminate the rebellion are now being led by the coldly analytical Grand Admiral Thrawn, whose strategic, tactical and cultural insights make him a threat unlike any they have faced before. In season three, Ezra and Sabine take on new roles and challenges as the rebels prepare for their biggest mission yet – a direct assault on the Empire.”

The unexpected return of Grand Admiral Thrawn (previously discussed HERE) is a brilliant move by the producers and will no doubt spike viewership. What was once cast aside by Disney in 2014 as merely “Legends”, will now return to the fold as canon.

Can we expect other characters and story lines from the Expanded Universe to be re-canonized? Star Wars Rebels, it seems, may be just the portal we need.

Tune in on Saturday, 24 Sept. 2016 (8:30 p.m., EST) for the one-hour premiere, “Steps into Shadow”, on Disney X-D.
