“I Have a Bad Feeling About This”: From “Star Wars” to “Rogue One”

December 24, 2016 – True to form, Rogue One has preserved the tradition of using a well-known signature line heard in every Star Wars film.

The spoken line (“I have a bad feeling about this” or a close variant) is now heard in all eight Star Wars films. By its very repetition, the phrase has almost become a running gag, spoken by various characters at least once in each film (and twice each in Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi).

The “bad” is often emphasized and stretched out to sound like “baaaad”.

Presented here are all the usages in movie-release order, starting from the very first time we heard it in Star Wars: A New Hope and ending with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story:

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (May 25, 1977)
“I have a very bad feeling about this.”
―Luke Skywalker, as the Millennium Falcon approaches the Death Star

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (Dec. 18, 2015)

―Han Solo, upon realizing that the Rathtars have been set loose on his freighter.

k-2so-and-jyn-ersoRogue One: A Star Wars Story (Dec. 16, 2016)
K-2SO: “I’ve got a bad feeling abou-”
Jyn: “Quiet.”
K-2SO: “What?”

Ironically, the least Force-sensitive character, Han Solo, manages to say the “bad feeling” phrase the most of all characters (i.e., three times over three movies – Eps. IV, VI and VII). The young Obi-Wan utters his misgivings twice, once each in Eps. I and III.

Two droids, C-3PO in Ep. VI and K-2SO in Rogue One, have parroted the phrase – though K-2SO’s misgivings are interrupted by Jyn.
