“I Have a Bad Feeling About This”: From “Star Wars” to “Rogue One”

December 24, 2016 – True to form, Rogue One has preserved the tradition of using a well-known signature line heard in every Star Wars film.

The spoken line (“I have a bad feeling about this” or a close variant) is now heard in all eight Star Wars films. By its very repetition, the phrase has almost become a running gag, spoken by various characters at least once in each film (and twice each in Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi).

The “bad” is often emphasized and stretched out to sound like “baaaad”.

Presented here are all the usages in movie-release order, starting from the very first time we heard it in Star Wars: A New Hope and ending with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story:

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (May 25, 1977)
“I have a very bad feeling about this.”
―Luke Skywalker, as the Millennium Falcon approaches the Death Star

“I got a bad feeling about this.”
―Han Solo, before the walls of the trash compactor start to close in

Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (May 25, 1983)

IHaveABadFeeling-ObiWan-EpIII

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (Dec. 18, 2015)
“I have a bad feeling about this.”
―Han Solo, upon realizing that the Rathtars have been set loose on his freighter.

k-2so-and-jyn-ersoRogue One: A Star Wars Story (Dec. 16, 2016)
K-2SO: “I’ve got a bad feeling abou-”
Jyn: “Quiet.”
K-2SO: “What?”

Ironically, the least Force-sensitive character, Han Solo, manages to say the “bad feeling” phrase the most of all characters (i.e., three times over three movies – Eps. IV, VI and VII). The young Obi-Wan utters his misgivings twice, once each in Eps. I and III.

Two droids, C-3PO in Ep. VI and K-2SO in Rogue One, have parroted the phrase – though K-2SO’s misgivings are interrupted by Jyn.

TFA-Poe BB8 battle Quote No. 15 (“The Force, it’s calling to you. Just let it in.”) will throw off some readers. Even though Maz’s line was heard in the trailers, it never made it into the final cut of the movie. Other lines that ended up on the cutting-room floor include Finn’s “I’ve got nothing to fight for” and the Maz-Rey dialogue (Maz: “Who are you?” Rey: “I’m no one.”)

If you got 11 or fewer answers correct, you have failed for the last time. Go back and watch the movie again. If you scored 12-17 answers correct, you are not a Jedi yet. And if you correctly matched 18 or more, congratulations. You may have “Ummmmm… one-quarter portion.”

“I Have a Bad Feeling About This” from Episodes I Through VII

January 6, 2016 – So far, all seven Star Wars films, from Episode I: The Phantom Menace through Episode VII: The Force Awakens, have been consistent with the opening line:

ALongTimeAgo All seven films have started with a narrative crawl, set against the backdrop of space, with the majestic Star Wars theme jolting you awake:

But perhaps best of all is the recurring line (“I have a bad feeling about this“) or a close variant, heard in all seven Star Wars films. The phrase has become a running gag, spoken by various characters at least once in each film (and twice each in Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi).

Often times, the “bad” is emphasized and stretched out to sound like “baaaad”.

So here, in reverse timeline order, are the phrases, starting with the sequel (Ep. VII), then the original trilogy (Eps. IV-VI), and finally the prequels (Eps. I-III):

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens
“I have a bad feeling about this.”
―Han Solo, upon realizing that the Rathtars have been set loose on his freighter.

Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi
“I have a really bad feeling about this.”

“I Have a Bad Feeling about This”

August 26, 2013 – All six Star Wars movies contained the following line, or a close variation to it: “I have a bad feeling about this.” Sometimes the lines were spoken twice in a movie. So what are the odds that this line (now almost a running gag) will be incorporated in Episodes VII, VIII and IX?

1. Episode IV: A New Hope (“I have a very bad feeling about this.”)
―Luke Skywalker, when the Millennium Falcon approaches the Death Star

(“I got a bad feeling about this.”)
―Han Solo, before the walls of the trash compactor start to close in

2. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (“I have a bad feeling about this.”)
―Princess Leia, while inside the belly of the space slug, just before the mynocks appear

3. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (“Artoo, I have a bad feeling about this.”)
―C-3PO, when entering Jabba the Hutt’s palace

“I have a really bad feeling about this.”
―Han Solo, after the Ewoks capture the strike team

4. Episode I: The Phantom Menace (“I have a bad feeling about this.”)
―As Obi-Wan Kenobi’s first line at the beginning when Kenobi talks to Qui-Gon Jinn onboard Saak’ak

5. Episode II: Attack of the Clones (“I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”)
―Anakin Skywalker at Geonosis in the arena

6. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (“Oh, I have a bad feeling about this.”)
―Obi-Wan Kenobi talking to Anakin Skywalker as their starfighters approach a large, closing blast door on Invisible Hand
