Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Reaches Capacity on Opening Day in Orlando

August 29, 2019 – As many had predicted, opening day crowds at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge quickly reached capacity and the land was deemed “closed” to standby guests.

Even the threat of an approaching Hurricane Dorian, currently expected to reach Florida early Monday morning through Tuesday, did not scare off large crowds determined to enter Disney’s newest themed land.

With Hurricane Dorian days away from hitting Florida, devoted fans had other priorities to attend to at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge.

The No. 1 priority for most guests was to ride the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (no apostrophe ‘s) attraction, whose line at one point started at the Market section, then extended out toward Toy Story Land, before wrapping back past Oga’s Cantina and into the Falcon’s interior queue.

The wait to ride Smugglers Run was, on average, anywhere from 180 and up to 300 minutes long.

Galaxy’s Edge quickly reached capacity just minutes after opening at 6:00 AM to massive crowds. But Disney was prepared and activated its virtual queuing system, assigning a return time or boarding group to each guest. For visitors who did not have or chose not to use the My Disney Experience app, they could obtain a printed return time from Guest Relations.

There were, of course, other lines to other destinations in Galaxy’s Edge: Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities; Oga’s Cantina; and others. But after waiting four years for the first-ever Star Wars-themed land to open, guests didn’t seem to mind waiting several more hours “to live their own Star Wars adventure.”
