What Carrie Fisher Said in “The Princess Diarist”

December 20, 2019 – In addition to her acting abilities, Carrie Fisher was a supremely talented writer and a gifted editor. She captured the essence of Star Wars best in a quote for the ages:

Carrie Fisher wrote the above lines in her memoir, “The Princess Diarist”, published 22 November 2016. The book is the third memoir she wrote, in addition to four novels and a one-woman Broadway show.

“I Have a Bad Feeling About This” from Episodes I Through VII

January 6, 2016 – So far, all seven Star Wars films, from Episode I: The Phantom Menace through Episode VII: The Force Awakens, have been consistent with the opening line:

ALongTimeAgo All seven films have started with a narrative crawl, set against the backdrop of space, with the majestic Star Wars theme jolting you awake:

But perhaps best of all is the recurring line (“I have a bad feeling about this“) or a close variant, heard in all seven Star Wars films. The phrase has become a running gag, spoken by various characters at least once in each film (and twice each in Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi).

Often times, the “bad” is emphasized and stretched out to sound like “baaaad”.

So here, in reverse timeline order, are the phrases, starting with the sequel (Ep. VII), then the original trilogy (Eps. IV-VI), and finally the prequels (Eps. I-III):

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens
“I have a bad feeling about this.”
―Han Solo, upon realizing that the Rathtars have been set loose on his freighter.

Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi
“I have a really bad feeling about this.”
―Han Solo, about to be spitfire-roasted, after the Ewoks capture him and his strike team

“Artoo, I have a bad feeling about this.”

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

Ironically, the least Force-sensitive character, Han Solo, manages to say the “bad feeling” phrase the most of all characters (i.e., three times over three movies – Eps. IV, VI and VII). The young Obi-Wan utters his misgivings twice, once each in Eps. I and III. And only once has a droid (C-3PO in Ep. VI) parroted the phrase.
