Star Wars Weekends: Boba Fett Stein “Sold Out” on Weekend One

May 17, 2015 – On Friday the 15th, the first day of Disney’s Star Wars Weekends, the buzz on the streets was “get the Boba Fett Stein before it sells out.” Well, Friday came and went, and there were no plastic steins to be had. None of the stores had received stock yet.

On Saturday morning, May 16th, the Boba Fett steins arrived at Watto’s Grotto, the temporary Star Wars Weekends store. You could also purchase them at various slushie/popcorn kiosks throughout Hollywood Studios.

Even though Disney calls them a “stein”, it’s actually an incredibly well-designed plastic mug-type cup with a hinged lid and a handle that depicts the bounty hunter’s jetpack missile. The helmet is, of course, dented, and parts of it are hand-painted for a weathered look.

There is a separate piece which you attach to a slot in the helmet and which represents the broadband antenna. (TRIVIA: In The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the antenna swings down in front of Fett’s visor to become a range-finder, which tracks up to 30 possible targets. The plastic stein does not allow such movement, however.)
BobaFettStein-SIGN-$9.99 Here is the incredible part: At the outdoor kiosks selling popcorn and slushies, Disney priced the stein at only $9.99 each. Moreover, the stein comes with a semifrozen slushie drink in a separate disposable plastic cup, which fits neatly into the Boba Fett stein. The throwaway cup helps to keep your stein clean and sticky-free.

If you want alcohol added to your drink, it’s an additional $9.00. Or you can just buy the drink without the stein for $3.99. You could also request a mixed half-and-half combination, for example, a strawberry-Coca Cola slushie or a blue raspberry-wild cherry combination.

Needless to say, the steins sold out quickly by the end of Saturday. It was not uncommon to see guests buying three, four or even five of these steins.

On Sunday morning, this was the sign which greeted guests inside Watto’s Grotto: BobaFettStein-SIGN-SoldOut

Check out the gallery below. You will appreciate the details and artwork that went into this beautifully crafted cup. Not bad for what is essentially a piece of molded plastic.

Predictably, some of these steins have made their way onto Ebay at wildly inflated prices from $39.99 up to $100.00 “or best offer”.

Last year’s exclusive cup was the Stormtrooper hinged cup. It sold well, but did not generate half the buzz of the Boba Fett stein.

UPDATE on 22 May 2015

GOOD NEWS: The Boba Fett steins were back in supply throughout Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Friday, May 22nd. Oddly, however, we noticed Disney was selling them at three different prices: $13.00 in Watto’s Grotto at Darth’s Mall (no Annual Passholders discount honored); $10.75 at certain outdoor popcorn-and-drink carts; and $9.99 at Peevy’s Polar Pipeline, a somewhat hidden outdoor drink counter located between the Hollywood and Vine restaurant and Echo Lake. Moreover, Peevy’s does grant you a 10% discount if you have an Annual Pass, reducing the price to $8.99. Same company; different prices in the same theme park. (This pricing differential also holds true for coffee, pastries and other food items at Hollywood Studios. Go figure.)

"Are they trying to get us drunk?" This drink menu at Watto's Grotto offers the Boba Fett stein "with (your) choice of alcoholic specialty beverage" for $23.00. Or you could buy the Boba Fett stein with a non-alcoholic drink for $13.00.
